These are the photos that I took between September 30th and October 30th and all the things that I saw while on the train, train stops, or hitchhikable destinations from train stops.  Unfortunately after many years the North American RailPass was discontinued on the day that I started my trip.

I find the best way to view the photos is to click on the first one and go through them one by one in the big view.   You can do it however you like though.

  • Jason trudging down the long walk to coach class.
  • Our first of many train friends, Dwight, who was a big shot casino dealer in a past life, and was on his way to philadelphia for some government testing. He had an extensive knowledge of the New York City night life, and had lots of interesting tidbits. He carried everything he had on the train in a heavy black plastic bag.
  • A clothesline, New York City
  • In New York City we stayed with PJ in his fancy pants Williamsburg apartment. We ate good food, helped with cats, and were immersed in PJs always interesting and entertaining everyday life. Pictured is a view from the train on the way out.
  • A building that was mysteriously half missing, no Bostonians surveyed knew about the missing half. We stayed with the friends of my wonderful downstairs neighbors from Pittsburgh. I liked our brief stay in Boston, our host Tam was great, we helped her partner move into a new place, went to a Barack Obama bowling fundraiser, and an expensive bar.
  • Our wonderful Portland hosts, formidable hitchhikers, lived in a small house of ten. All of their toothbrushes were in the same cup in their bathroom. We brought them beer, soup, and pastries which were graciously donated to us by a local bakery. It reminded me of the days of Ophelia.
  • The last piece of American soil I would see for almost a month - on the way out of Portland, ME by ferry to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada.
  • An old shipwreck a short walk from the port where I entered Canada, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
  • Jason and our new friend George, who was traveling the world after graduating from high school in Germany. We met him on the ferry and ran into him many times on the trip. We helped him hitchike to his cousins in Halifax, who graciously hosted us there on short notice. Goerge is on the left, Jason on the right with our first hitchhiking sign in tow.
  • Hitchhiking alone at night as the storms rolled in, I found a ride for Jason and our new friend, George, with a man who resembled Doc from back to the future. I walked 20 km in the rain before getting picked up by an older gentleman, he made his own trail mix, which had Sweet Tarts in it, and dropped me off at a sign which read "New Minas - A good place to live." I took a hot shower and cried myself to sleep watching Remember the Titans.
  • The Citadel hill rising from the center of Halifax.
  • A change of guards at the Citadel in Halifax. These guys were dead serious, and watched over the city from the top of the hill like hawks.
  • Houses in Halifax were painted in bold colors and well kept, this guy is touching up an already perfect paint job.
  • A sail boat, a container ship, a tug boat, and a light house walk into a Halifax bar...
  • These are the dinosaurs, they protected us everywhere we went, seen here scaring off a big boat.
